Note: Sunmi has used the process of a pearl getting created to talk about mental health. Shells produce some chemicals and in order to protect themselves, the chemicals will constantly coat an irritant layer by layer, creating a pearl. Sunmi thought the way we live, covering our imperfections and shortcomings by adding layers to ourselves to seem like better people, is similar in that sense. Since most people can relate and a lot of people suffer from mental health issues because of this, she wrote the song. She said the reason why the lyrics could seem rather negative is that when we're done after a long day and we take the mask off, we're exhausted and sad and we often think "Why am I so tired? What's so good about this?"
